The Seneca chief Red Jacket was ardently
bent on defending Seneca beliefs and culture against white influences. He
cringed especially at the rising popularity of Christianity. His second wife's
conversion to Christianity in 1826 actually prompted him to leave her and move
to a neighboring reservation. They were later reconciled, but his distrust of
missionaries remained firm. Tired of white deception, Red Jacket told
missionaries visiting the Buffalo Creek Reservation that before proselytizing
Christianity among the Senecas, they should look to the moral and spiritual
lives of the citizens of Buffalo, New York, who cheat Indians all too often:
"Let us know the tree by the blossoms, and the blossoms by the fruit."
