The Mormons moved west in 1839 and established a settlement at Nauvoo, Illinois, on the Mississippi River. In a few years, immigration made Nauvoo one of the largest cities in the region. Mormon leadership exerted theocratic rule over the town and the people. From the start, the Mormons were unwelcome neighbors, and frictions between them and American "gentile" settlers increased.
